Colombia earthquake: Shakira and Howard Buffett lead school reconstruction efforts

A magnitude 7.4 earthquake struck western Colombia on August 10, 2026, causing widespread devastation. The disaster has resulted in at least 289 deaths and left thousands injured, with over 26,000 dwellings destroyed and 127,557 homes damaged. The earthquake significantly impacted infrastructure, affecting hundreds of roads, water systems, and airports, while damaging over 2,800 schools and 285 health centers.

In response to the crisis, singer Shakira and philanthropist Howard Graham Buffett visited the Chocó department to support reconstruction efforts. Shakira has pledged to focus personal efforts on rebuilding the Universidad Tecnológica del Chocó and, alongside the Barefoot Foundation, aims to construct 10 new schools in the region.

Financial aid for educational reconstruction has reached approximately $1.25 million, including $500,000 from the FIFA Global Citizen Education Fund, $500,000 from Live Nation, and $250,000 from the Development Bank of Latin America and the Caribbean (CAF). Humanitarian organizations, including Samaritan’s Purse, are also providing essential supplies such as hygiene kits and shelter materials to affected communities.
