Colombia birth rates decline 4.5% in 2025

Colombia experienced a 4.5% decrease in births during 2025, totaling 433,678 births according to preliminary data from the National Administrative Department of Statistics (DANE). This decline represents a deceleration compared to previous years, where annual reductions ranged between 7% and 12%.

The country's total fertility rate fell to 1.0 child per woman, significantly below the population replacement level of 2.1. The most notable decreases in birth rates occurred among women aged 15 to 19 and 20 to 24. While most regions saw declines, departments such as Guainía, Quindío, Tolima, and La Guajira recorded increases in births.

Concurrently, non-fetal deaths in Colombia rose by 2.8% during the same period.
