Colombia faces El Niño droughts and social developments

Colombia is facing diverse social and environmental developments. The El Niño phenomenon is causing significant drought and heat in the Andean region, threatening water supplies, agriculture, and increasing the risk of forest fires. Authorities note that the phenomenon could persist into early 2027, impacting livestock and food availability.

In public health, Colombia has achieved a 32.1% reduction in child mortality related to malnutrition for 2025, meeting the 2030 Agenda goals ahead of schedule. Additionally, medical experts are highlighting the link between untreated hearing loss and increased risks of cognitive decline and Alzheimer's.

In education and technology, the Universidad Distrital has opened enrollment for 47 undergraduate programs for the 2027-I term, offering 'Matrícula Cero' benefits. Meanwhile, the 'Colombia 5.0' initiative is promoting digital transformation and technological training in Ciudad Bolívar to boost local productivity.
