Colombia bombings prompt demands for stronger security and criticism of Petro's government

Recent bombings in Colombia were condemned as terrorist attacks against civilians. The authors called for a greater state presence, especially in intelligence and counter‑intelligence, arguing that current security forces have failed to dismantle violent hotspots.

They criticized President Gustavo Petro’s administration, accusing it of inadequate security policies and urging a return to a more robust “democratic security” approach. The commentary highlighted the continued influence of illegal armed groups such as the ELN and the Clan del Golfo, which now affect roughly 180 municipalities, up from 76 under the previous peace process. The authors also noted that violence is driven by narcotics trafficking, illegal mining and links to international cartels, and that regions like Nariño and Catatumbo only enjoy partial peace.
