Colombia budget cuts threaten Special Jurisdiction for Peace court

The administration of President Abelardo de la Espriella has announced a 2027 budget that includes significant reductions for various government bodies, including the Special Jurisdiction for Peace (JEP). The proposed cuts to the JEP are valued at approximately 181 billion Colombian pesos, or roughly $57 million.

Established in 2016 as part of a peace agreement with the Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia (FARC), the JEP is a transitional justice court tasked with investigating and prosecuting crimes committed during the country's six-decade-long internal armed conflict. Victims, families of the disappeared, and former combatants have expressed concerns that these financial reductions could prevent the court from fulfilling its mandate.

In addition to the budget reductions, a Senate committee has advanced a bill aimed at further impacting the institution.
