Colombia Implements 42‑Hour Workweek, Ending Gradual Reduction
Effective 15 July 2026 Colombia’s private‑sector workers are limited to a maximum of 42 hours per week, completing the gradual reduction set out by Law 2101 of 2021 and the 2025 labour reform. The change does not reduce salaries, benefits or accrued rights; instead it raises the hourly wage rate used to calculate overtime, night‑shift premiums and weekend surcharges.
Employers and employees may distribute the 42 hours over five or six days, with daily shifts ranging from four to nine hours, provided the weekly average does not exceed the limit. Night work is now defined as hours after 7 p.m., and the surcharge for work on Sundays and public holidays rose to 90 % on 1 July 2026, with a plan to reach 100 % in 2027. The reform also eliminates the mandatory “Día de la Familia” paid‑leave day, though companies may offer it voluntarily.
A survey by the Colombian Human‑Resources Federation (ACRIP) found that 68 % of firms expect a slight profit dip, while 90 % acknowledge benefits for employee wellbeing. Companies are adjusting shift schedules, adopting flexible hours and re‑structuring internal processes to maintain productivity under the shorter workweek.
