Colombia coal mine explosion kills six workers

Six miners died following a methane gas explosion at the El Porvenir 1 coal mine in Cucunubá, Cundinamarca. The explosion caused a collapse within the mine, trapping the workers. While rescue operations were underway, authorities confirmed that six individuals were found dead, though a seventh worker managed to escape the site on his own.

The victims have been identified as Duvan Ferney Rodríguez, Cristian de Jesús Contreras Latorre, Sebastián Contreras Latorre, Eduard Alexander Díaz, Yerson Mauricio Rojas, and Jhon Mario Triviño Serna.

The National Mining Agency (ANM) had previously ordered a suspension of operations at this specific mine due to safety concerns and was conducting an investigation at the time of the incident. The region is known for numerous small-scale mining operations, some of which operate illegally or with expired permits, where gas explosions due to poor ventilation are a frequent hazard. This tragedy occurs as Colombia continues recovery efforts following a recent 7.4 magnitude earthquake in the western part of the country.
