Colombia communities focus on water conservation and cultural heritage

In Colombia, community-led initiatives are focusing on the preservation of vital water resources through both environmental restoration and cultural recognition.

In the Guitungal district of Córdoba, Nariño, local residents participated in an environmental restoration day to protect the water sources of the Guáitara River. The initiative involved planting native tree species to recover strategic areas of the basin and its tributaries. This effort addresses long-standing issues of contamination caused by wastewater discharge and aims to strengthen the ecosystem through continuous community commitment.

Simultaneously, in Honda, Tolima, the third 'Encuentro de Ciudadanos del Río' (River Citizens Meeting) brought together community leaders, artists, and researchers to discuss the relationship between Colombian society and its waterways. Held as part of 'La Magdalena Fest' and led by the organization Colombia Crea Talento, the event focused on safeguarding ancestral knowledge and traditional practices that contribute to the conservation of bodies of water, ranging from the Amazonian rivers to the Magdalena River.
