Colombia conducts National Emergency Response Drill

Colombia held its 2026 National Emergency Response Drill on Wednesday, October 21, covering more than 96% of the national territory. Led by the National Unit for Disaster Risk Management (UNGRD), the exercise involved approximately 48,000 public and private entities and over 5,000 communities across 1,046 registered municipalities.

The drill was structured into two distinct phases. The first phase, held at 10:00 a.m., focused on citizens, families, schools, and businesses practicing evacuation protocols, self-protection measures, and identifying meeting points. The second phase, scheduled for 2:00 p.m., was designed for local governments and disaster management authorities to validate territorial response strategies, decision-making, and inter-institutional coordination.

While many regions focused on earthquake scenarios, other areas simulated risks such as floods, fires, and landslides. In Bogotá, the exercise saw significant participation, with nearly two million people involved in a multi-hazard simulation including forest fires and air quality issues. Other regional activities included military response drills, aeromedical evacuations in Rionegro, and institutional evacuations in departments like Magdalena and Córdoba.
