Abelardo de la Espriella pledges respect for Constitutional Court

President Abelardo de la Espriella has reaffirmed his commitment to judicial independence and the authority of the Constitutional Court during a meeting with magistrates in Santander. He stated that while his administration may disagree with certain rulings, it will never disregard the court's decisions or undermine its institutional importance, emphasizing that judicial independence serves as a guarantee for citizens rather than a privilege for judges.

Simultaneously, the Constitutional Court has issued significant rulings. The court unanimously declared the exception for animal-drawn vehicles in tourism activities unconstitutional, citing the need to protect animals as sentient beings and uphold the right to a healthy environment. This decision modifies Law 2138 of 2021, effectively ending the use of horse-drawn carriages for tourism.

In a separate legal matter, a judge in Bogotá ordered President De la Espriella to refrain from participating in religious acts in his official capacity that imply state identification with a specific confession. This ruling follows a legal challenge regarding the President's participation in a religious ceremony during a public event for earthquake victims. Additionally, the President of the Senate offered apologies for the inclusion of religious invocations during the presidential inauguration to comply with a judicial order regarding state neutrality.
