Colombia Constitutional Court protects fans' right to criticize football clubs
The Constitutional Court of Colombia has ruled that football clubs and authorities cannot prohibit fans from displaying critical messages in stadiums, establishing a significant precedent for professional football in the country.
The ruling, Sentencia T-324 de 2026, protected the freedom of expression of Erik Saavedra Bustos, a Millonarios club shareholder and season ticket holder. Saavedra Bustos had been denied entry to El Campín stadium after attempting to bring banners criticizing the club's management with messages such as “Club gigante, dirigentes mediocres” (Giant club, mediocre leaders) and “Jueguen como cobran” (Play like you are paid).
Logistics personnel had previously blocked his entry, arguing the messages could damage the club's corporate image or incite economic panic. However, the Court dismissed these arguments, stating the phrases were opinions and value judgments regarding administration and player performance rather than verifiable accusations of corruption or crimes. The Court determined that criticizing leadership or performance is a legitimate part of sporting discussion.
