Colombia constructs record-breaking tunnel to connect Medellín and Caribbean coast

Colombia is advancing a major infrastructure project centered on the Túnel del Toyo, also known as the Túnel Guillermo Gaviria Echeverri. This massive undertaking aims to connect the Valle de Aburrá with the Urabá region, significantly improving travel between Medellín and the Caribbean coast.

The project features a main tunnel approximately 9.73 kilometers long, part of a larger 40-kilometer corridor that includes various bridges, viaducts, and roads. Spanning territories such as Santa Fe de Antioquia, Cañasgordas, and Dabeiba, the construction seeks to reduce travel times that currently can take up to seven hours due to difficult mountainous geography.
