Colombia government lifts ban on aerial glyphosate spraying for coca eradication
The government of Abelardo de la Espriella has repealed Resolution 6 of 2015, lifting the ban on the aerial spraying of glyphosate to eradicate illicit coca crops in Colombia. This decision marks a significant shift in the country's anti-narcotics policy, fulfilling a campaign promise to combat the expansion of illegal crops, which reached a record 261,000 hectares in 2024.
However, the repeal does not authorize the immediate resumption of aerial fumigation. To reactivate the program, the government must comply with strict conditions established by the Constitutional Court. These requirements include the creation of a General Environmental Management Plan by the National Authority of Environmental Licenses (ANLA) and the completion of prior consultation processes with ethnic and indigenous communities in the targeted areas.
The decision follows arguments that recent findings from the US Environmental Protection Agency and the US Supreme Court suggest glyphosate is unlikely to be carcinogenic, contrasting with previous stances held by the World Health Organization.
