Colombia debates biological approach to school sexual education

A legislative proposal in the Colombian Congress is sparking debate regarding sexual education in schools. The bill, titled ‘He is he and she is she’ (Proyecto 367/2026C), seeks to establish sexual education guidelines based on a ‘biological approach’ and ‘verifiable scientific criteria’ from primary through secondary school.

The initiative, presented by seven congress members, aims to focus on sexual identity recognition and self-care. This follows previous discussions by the former Minister of Education, Viviane Morales, who criticized what she described as a ‘woke campaign’ attempting to influence comprehensive sexual education programs. Morales advocated for a review of educational materials to reduce ‘ideologization’ and increase parental involvement in monitoring school content.
