Colombia debates teacher evaluation models and educational purpose

A legislative project introduced by Daniel Briceño has reignited debate regarding teacher evaluation models in Colombia. Educators from Sogamoso and Bogotá have criticized the current system, describing it as “quantitative, punitive, and individualizing.” They are advocating for a shift toward a formative, qualitative, and contextualized model that prioritizes pedagogical improvement and classroom support rather than sanctions.

This discussion occurs amidst a broader ideological dispute over the purpose of education in Colombia. The debate encompasses questions of legitimacy in knowledge, the role of values, and the influence of the government on cultural institutions. While some figures, such as Minister of Education Ilva Myriam Hoyos, emphasize forming generations based on “knowledge, values, liberty, and character,” others raise concerns regarding ideological indoctrination and the secular nature of educational institutions.
