Colombia earthquake: 250 dead after magnitude 7.4 tremor FAST-MOVING
A magnitude 7.4 earthquake struck Colombia on August 10, 2026, with its epicenter located in San José del Palmar, Chocó. The tremor, considered the strongest in the country this century, has caused widespread destruction across multiple departments, including Valle del Cauca, Risaralda, and Caldas.
Casualty reports vary, but regional authorities estimate at least 240 to 250 deaths and over 1,600 injuries. Significant damage has been reported in cities such as Cali, Pereira, Quibdó, and Manizales, with hundreds of people feared trapped under rubble. In Cali alone, officials report approximately 239 people remain trapped.
President Abelardo De La Espriella has declared a national disaster and three days of national mourning. The government has also ordered flags to be flown at half-mast in all public buildings and Colombian diplomatic missions abroad.
International aid is being coordinated, with offers from the United States, Spain, the European Union, and the Vatican. Spain has pledged an initial one million euros in humanitarian assistance. Meanwhile, Spanish authorities are working to locate 75 Spanish citizens who remain unlocated following the disaster.
