Urban planning experts meet to discuss reconstruction of Quibdó and Chocó

Urban planners, engineers, and local officials are convening at Universidad EAFIT in Medellín for the RE Quibdó & Chocó 2026 academic encounter. A central panel, titled “Challenges for urban planning and the reconstruction of Quibdó and Chocó,” focuses on the lessons learned from recent earthquakes and the necessity of strategic territorial ordering.

The discussions aim to address the practicalities of rebuilding collapsed housing, whether through on-site reconstruction or relocation. The Mayor of Quibdó has already designated 24 hectares for potential relocation efforts. The event includes technical support from professors and students from Medellín universities who assisted during the earthquake emergency, alongside representatives from the Chocó regional government and various local municipalities including Condoto, Tadó, and Atrato.
