Colombia drops in global governance and quality‑of‑life rankings

Colombia fell seven places in the Chandler Good Government Index 2026, moving from rank 66 to 73 out of 133 nations, while remaining fourth among Latin American countries behind Chile, Uruguay and Peru. The index evaluates leadership, institutional strength, financial management, market attractiveness, global influence and capacity to foster social development.

In the Wharton School’s Best Countries 2026 index, Colombia ranked 69th of 85 nations, placing it third worst in Latin America for quality of life after Ecuador and Guatemala. Analysts linked the poor performance to persistent security challenges, limited economic opportunities and difficulties in implementing social policies. The Department of Prosperidad Social (DPS) was highlighted for its role in public welfare programs, and experts called for better coordination between national and regional governments. Singapore topped the governance index, followed by Norway, Denmark, Finland and Sweden.
