Mexico repatriates 36 citizens following Colombia earthquake

Following a magnitude 7.4 earthquake in Colombia, the Mexican government has repatriated 36 Mexican citizens who were in vulnerable conditions. The group was transported from Pereira’s Matecaña International Airport to the Santa Lucía Military Air Base in the State of Mexico via a Mexican Air Force C-130 Hercules aircraft. The flight, which arrived at approximately 00:30, was part of a larger humanitarian mission that had previously delivered food and supplies to the affected Colombian regions.

The Mexican Ministry of Foreign Affairs (SRE) and the Secretariat of National Defense (SEDENA) accompanied the citizens, all of whom are reported to be safe and in good health. The Mexican Embassy in Colombia remains active, coordinating with commercial airlines to assist other citizens and helping relocate those whose hotels suffered structural damage.

The earthquake, which struck near San José del Palmar in the Chocó department, has caused widespread devastation across Valle del Cauca, Risaralda, Chocó, Caldas, and Quindío. Regional authorities report at least 250 deaths, 2,500 injuries, and more than 2,700 missing persons. In response to the disaster, Colombian President Abelardo de la Espriella has declared three days of national mourning.
