Colombia earthquake: 287 dead and rescue efforts continue in Pereira
The aftermath of the August 10 earthquake in Colombia continues to cause devastation, particularly in the city of Pereira. According to the UNGRD, the national death toll has reached 287, with 4,147 injured and 194 people missing. In Pereira alone, 94 people have died, and approximately 140,000 individuals have been affected.
Search and rescue efforts recently concluded at a collapsed hotel in Pereira, where the Mexican Ministry of Foreign Affairs confirmed the deaths of two Mexican nationals. In a separate rescue operation, emergency teams successfully saved nine people trapped in the heavily damaged 15-story Invico building; the structure has been deemed unsafe and requires demolition.
The humanitarian crisis is being exacerbated by heavy rainfall, which has flooded the Hospital Universitario San Jorge and left displaced families living in tents exposed to the elements. The Mexican Embassy is currently assisting the families of the deceased with funeral arrangements and repatriation.
