Colombia earthquake and fires trigger massive insurance claims and regional damage

A significant earthquake struck southwestern Colombia on August 10, causing widespread impact. In the Tolima department, the disaster coincided with massive forest fires that destroyed over 40,000 hectares, including 8,000 hectares of productive agricultural land. This environmental crisis is particularly impactful for Tolima, where the agricultural sector accounts for approximately 24.2% of the regional GDP.

In response to the seismic event, the insurance company Suramericana reported receiving approximately 11,800 claims. The company has already disbursed over $70,100 million to policyholders, accounting for roughly 38% of the total payouts made by the insurance industry for this event. Suramericana president Juana Francisca Llano stated that while 9% of claims have been settled, 90% remain in process.

To mitigate future risks, Suramericana has deployed more than 70 structural engineers to affected areas to assess whether homes require simple repairs or full reconstruction. The company maintains $585,000 million in reserves to manage ongoing evaluations and incoming claims.
