Colombia earthquake: Argentina sends humanitarian aid as death toll rises

A week after a 7.4 magnitude earthquake struck San José del Palmar, Chocó, in Colombia, international humanitarian efforts are intensifying. The disaster, which occurred on August 10, has resulted in a provisional death toll of approximately 287 to 289 people, with thousands injured and hundreds missing.

Argentina has joined the international response by deploying a Hercules aircraft from its Air Force. The mission includes a water purification plant, a field kitchen, and military personnel to assist with rescue and logistical support. This follows an offer of solidarity made by Argentine Foreign Minister Pablo Quirno to the Colombian government.

The National Unit for Disaster Risk Management (UNGRD) reports that the emergency affects nearly 186,000 people across 472 municipalities in 15 departments. Extensive damage has been recorded, including over 127,000 damaged homes and more than 26,000 destroyed structures.

In response, the Colombian Army has deployed over 500 soldiers, including specialized search and rescue units, canine teams, and drone operators, to regions such as Chocó, Valle del Cauca, Cali, and the Coffee Axis. While rescue and debris removal continue, the relief effort has also faced political controversy regarding the criteria for accepting certain international search and rescue equipment.
