Colombia earthquake causes 331 deaths and massive economic damage

A major earthquake in Colombia has resulted in 331 deaths, 4,519 injuries, and left 136 people missing. The disaster has caused extensive damage to homes, hospitals, schools, and businesses.

According to the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) and the National Unit for Disaster Risk Management (UNGRD), the economic impact of the recovery is estimated at 42.1 trillion pesos, representing approximately 2.3% of Colombia's GDP.

In response to the housing crisis, the government has offered rental subsidies ranging from 600,000 to 800,000 pesos for three months. However, there is currently no clear roadmap for the reconstruction of homes and buildings, despite mentions of involvement from various national and international private actors.
