Colombia earthquake causes mass casualties and humanitarian crisis

A powerful earthquake struck large parts of Colombia on August 10, causing a severe humanitarian crisis. Current reports indicate at least 240 deaths, more than 2,600 injuries, and 3,000 people missing.

Emergency response operations are underway, with coordination centers established in Bogotá, Quibdó, Armenia, and Cali. Caritas teams and local volunteers are prioritizing the search for survivors, though damaged infrastructure and interrupted communication lines are hindering access to many affected communities. There is an urgent need for medical supplies, clean drinking water, food, and emergency shelter.

In response, Caritas International has provided an initial 50,000 euros in immediate aid to Caritas Colombia. Additionally, the Diocese of Aachen and the Aachen Diocesan Caritas Association have called upon their parishes to hold special collections on August 16 and 23 to support relief efforts.
