Colombia earthquake: Death toll nears 300 as international aid arrives
A devastating 7.4 magnitude earthquake that struck Colombia on August 10 has caused widespread destruction, affecting over 115,000 people across 15 departments. The disaster, centered in the Chocó department, has resulted in at least 295 deaths, 320 people missing, and nearly 4,000 injuries. Official reports indicate that 66 buildings have collapsed and over 14,000 homes have been destroyed.
International and domestic humanitarian efforts are underway. The Chilean Air Force has delivered two shipments of aid totaling approximately 30 tons, including food and hygiene kits. Additionally, the Huila department has launched a solidarity campaign, sending its first 5-ton shipment of essential supplies to Chocó. In Medellín, the local government has established 10 official collection points to facilitate donations.
The Colombian government has authorized specialized international search and rescue teams from the United States, Ecuador, and Israel to assist in recovery efforts. Emergency agencies continue to work in heavily impacted areas such as Chocó, Valle del Cauca, Risaralda, and Caldas.
