Colombia earthquake: 265 dead and economic emergency declared FAST-MOVING
A 7.4 magnitude earthquake struck western Colombia on Monday, centered in the Chocó department. The disaster has resulted in at least 265 deaths and 3,494 injuries, with 496 people still missing. Major cities such as Cali and Pereira have reported significant casualties and infrastructure damage.
President Abelardo De La Espriella has declared an economic emergency to facilitate reconstruction and relief efforts. He announced the creation of a “miracle fund” to finance the recovery of hospitals, schools, roads, and other public infrastructure. The government plans to provide rental subsidies, tax relief, and economic assistance to vulnerable families and small merchants.
Rescue operations have entered a critical phase as the 72-hour window for finding survivors beneath collapsed buildings begins to close. The National Unit for Disaster Risk Management (UNGRD) reports that at least 9,215 structures were completely destroyed, while 45,457 others sustained damage. The European Union has pledged 2 million euros in aid to support the most affected areas.
