Colombia earthquake: 281 dead and hundreds missing after 7.4 magnitude tremor
A 7.4 magnitude earthquake struck western Colombia near San José del Palmar, causing widespread destruction across 15 departments and 426 municipalities. The disaster has resulted in at least 281 deaths, 3,971 injuries, and 379 people reported missing.
Infrastructure damage is extensive, with reports of 127 to 172 buildings collapsed and over 65,000 homes damaged or destroyed. The earthquake also impacted hundreds of schools, health centers, and critical utility networks, including roads, bridges, and aqueducts. In the Valle del Cauca department, 148 fatalities were recorded.
President Abelardo de la Espriella has declared a national emergency and a three-day mourning period. The government has announced rent support for displaced families and is working to form a reconstruction fund involving the private sector. International aid has been accepted from the United States, El Salvador, Ecuador, and Israel, while Spain has pledged one million euros in humanitarian assistance. Search and rescue operations continue, though authorities warn that the window for finding survivors is closing.
