The tremor, which occurred at 7:34 am local time, had its epicenter near San José del Palmar in the Chocó department at a depth of approximately 96 to 103 kilometers. The disaster has caused widespread destruction across several departments, including Chocó, Valle del Cauca, Risaralda, Caldas, and Quindío.

Preliminary reports indicate at least 132 fatalities and over 570 injuries, though death tolls are expected to rise as rescue operations continue. Major cities such as Pereira, Cali, Quibdó, Manizales, and Armenia have been heavily impacted. In Pereira, 60 deaths were reported, while Cali faces significant damage to infrastructure, including hospitals and roads, and reports of nearly 188 missing persons.

President Abelardo de la Espriella has declared a state of national disaster and mobilized military and police forces to assist in search and rescue efforts. To maintain order and prevent looting, authorities have implemented curfews and mobility restrictions in several cities, including Cali and Pereira.
