Colombia earthquake: 7.4 magnitude quake kills at least 132 FAST-MOVING
A powerful 7.4 magnitude earthquake struck western Colombia near San José del Palmar in the Chocó department, causing widespread devastation. The seismic event, which occurred at a depth of approximately 103 kilometers, is noted as the strongest recorded in the country during the 21st century.
Preliminary reports indicate at least 132 fatalities and over 570 injuries, though these figures are expected to rise as rescue operations continue. Significant damage has been reported across several cities, including Pereira, Cali, Quibdó, Manizales, and Armenia. In Pereira, the death toll has reached 60. In Cali, hospitals have declared a red alert after reaching full capacity, and several large medical facilities were evacuated due to structural damage.
Infrastructure damage is extensive, with more than 1,600 buildings damaged and at least 61 buildings completely collapsed. Utilities such as electricity, water, and telecommunications have been disrupted in several regions. Commercial flight operations have been suspended at seven airports, including Matecaña International in Pereira and Alfonso Bonilla Aragón in Cali, to allow for safety inspections.
President Abelardo de la Espriella has declared a national state of emergency to coordinate rescue and relief efforts. The earthquake was also felt in neighboring Venezuela, Ecuador, and Panama. International assistance has been offered, including emergency aid from the United States.
