Colombia earthquake kills at least 181 in Choco region

A powerful 7.4 magnitude earthquake has struck the Choco region of Colombia, specifically in the San Jose del Palmar area. The disaster has resulted in at least 181 deaths and left more than 1,310 people injured.

In the city of Pereira, 66 fatalities have been recorded. The tremor has caused significant structural damage, affecting approximately 1,865 buildings, including private homes and public facilities. This event is noted as one of the largest earthquakes recorded in the country within the last decade.

In response to the catastrophe, President Abelardo de la Espriella declared a state of emergency. The Colombian military and national police have been mobilized to conduct extensive search and rescue operations to reach those trapped under the rubble.
