Colombia earthquake causes hundreds of deaths and massive destruction
A powerful 7.4 magnitude earthquake struck western Colombia on August 10, 2026, centered near San José del Palmar. The disaster has caused significant loss of life and widespread destruction across regions including Cali, Pereira, and the Chocó department.
President Abelardo de la Espriella reported preliminary figures of 289 deaths, 4,187 injuries, and 143 people missing, though the Institute of Legal Medicine has identified 304 bodies. The earthquake caused an estimated 30 billion Colombian pesos in damages, destroying approximately 27,000 residential units and damaging critical infrastructure such as hospitals and schools. Notably, the Instituto para Niños Ciegos y Sordos, a center for deaf and blind children, was completely destroyed, resulting in the deaths of two employees.
In the aftermath, the Colombian government has declared a state of emergency. International aid has been pledged, including 15 million dollars from the United States. Locally, singer Shakira has committed 1 million dollars toward rebuilding schools in the Chocó region.
The disaster has also triggered political controversy. Housing Minister Jaime Andrés Beltrán is facing a motion of no confidence after being criticized for being on vacation in Santa Marta during the emergency. Meanwhile, President de la Espriella has faced scrutiny regarding the political optics of his visits to the disaster zones.
