Colombia earthquake kills nearly 300 amid political transition

Colombia is facing a dual crisis following a major earthquake on August 10, 2026, which struck the Chocó region. The seismic event has resulted in a death toll of nearly 300 people, with the full extent of the damage still being assessed. In the city of Pereira, 13-year-old Juan Pablo Sánchez de Espinel gained attention for volunteering to clear debris to assist rescue efforts, stating, “I am not going to leave my country alone.”

The natural disaster coincides with the beginning of the administration of President Abelardo de la Espriella. Amidst the earthquake recovery, the country is also dealing with security challenges, including explosions targeting state infrastructure such as police stations and toll booths in departments like Cauca and Cesar, attributed to FARC dissidents and the ELN.
