Colombia earthquake kills over 100 people, including mayor's son

A magnitude 7.4 earthquake struck Colombia on Monday, August 10, 2026, resulting in more than 100 deaths. Among the victims is Mateo Valencia, the six-year-old son of Bahía Solano Mayor Jairson Leonel Valencia.

The child died after a building collapsed in Quibdó, the capital of the Chocó department, where the mayor's family was staying for municipal festivities. While the adults in the family survived the collapse, the boy was confirmed dead later that day.

In the Chocó region, at least 13 people have died due to the seismic activity. Local authorities, including the Civil Defense, Firefighters, and the Red Cross, have been working to clear debris and search for those trapped. Officials in Bahía Solano have issued prevention announcements to prepare the population for potential aftershocks.
