Colombia earthquake: Lawyer dies protecting dog in Cali collapse
Following a 7.4 magnitude earthquake that struck Colombia on August 10, 2026, the story of lawyer Lenny Ruiz Fernández has gained national attention. Fernández, originally from Pasto and residing in Cali, was found deceased beneath the rubble of the Ana Pilar building in the Cuarto de Legua neighborhood.
Rescuers from the Civil Defense discovered that Fernández's body had shielded her dog, Salomón, during the building's collapse. While Fernández did not survive the disaster, Salomón was found alive and was immediately provided with veterinary care.
Fernández was widely recognized for her commitment to animal welfare, having served for years with the Pasto Animal Defense Board. Her death and the survival of her pet have prompted widespread tributes from family, friends, and animal rights advocates across the country.
