Colombia earthquake kills hundreds and triggers national emergency FAST-MOVING

A powerful 7.4 magnitude earthquake struck western Colombia on Monday, August 10, with its epicenter near San José del Palmar in the Chocó department. The disaster has caused widespread devastation, particularly in the regions of Valle del Cauca, Risaralda, Chocó, and Caldas.

Casualty reports vary as authorities consolidate data, but recent updates indicate at least 265 deaths, hundreds of injuries, and nearly 500 people missing. Infrastructure damage is extensive, with over 11,000 homes destroyed, 140 buildings collapsed, and significant damage to hospitals, schools, and airports, including the Matecaña International Airport in Pereira.

President Abelardo De la Espriella has declared a national disaster and an economic and social emergency to facilitate reconstruction. He also decreed three days of national mourning. International aid is mobilizing, including a $15.5 million assistance package from the United States, humanitarian supplies from Mexico, and support from the European Union. Organizations like Conmebol and the Colombian Football Federation have also pledged $1 million for recovery efforts.

Search and rescue operations remain critical as teams work to locate survivors under the rubble. The earthquake has also disrupted regional logistics, notably impacting coffee exports due to road closures and landslides near the port of Buenaventura.
