A powerful 7.4 magnitude earthquake struck western Colombia on Monday morning, with its epicenter located near San José del Palmar in the Chocó department at a depth of approximately 103 kilometers. The tremor, described as the strongest in the country in the 21st century, was felt across Colombia and in neighboring Venezuela, Ecuador, and Panama.

Preliminary reports indicate at least 132 fatalities and over 570 injuries, though these numbers are expected to rise as rescue operations continue. The city of Pereira has reported the highest death toll with 60 fatalities. Significant structural damage has been documented, with more than 1,600 buildings damaged and at least 61 buildings completely collapsed. In Cali, the University Hospital del Valle suffered damage to approximately 30% of its infrastructure, including the pediatric and neonatal units.

President Abelardo de la Espriella has declared a nationwide state of emergency to coordinate rescue and relief efforts. Civil aviation authorities have suspended operations at seven airports in western Colombia, including those in Pereira, Manizales, Quibdó, Armenia, Cartago, and Buenaventura, to conduct safety inspections. The United States has pledged $15.5 million in emergency assistance to support the recovery efforts.
