Colombia earthquake kills 314 and destroys thousands of homes
A magnitude 7.4 earthquake that struck western Colombia on August 10 has resulted in at least 314 deaths and left 4,437 people injured. The seismic event, which had its epicenter near San José del Palmar in the Chocó department at a depth of approximately 82 kilometers, is considered the most powerful to hit the country this century.
The disaster has affected 471 municipalities across 15 departments, impacting approximately 262,154 people. Infrastructure damage is extensive: at least 30,664 homes were completely destroyed, 136,946 others sustained damage, and 302 buildings collapsed, with significant destruction reported in Cali and Pereira.
Public services and facilities have been severely compromised. Reports indicate damage to 3,470 schools, 4,971 community centers, and 352 healthcare facilities. Additionally, the earthquake impacted hundreds of roads, bridges, aqueducts, and five regional airports.
In response to the catastrophe, President Abelardo de la Espriella has declared a 30-day state of economic, social, and ecological emergency to facilitate relief efforts. Rescue operations continue as authorities search for 262 people still reported missing.
