Chocó earthquake isolates San José del Palmar
A 7.4 magnitude earthquake has caused significant damage and isolation in the Chocó department of Colombia. The municipality of San José del Palmar, located near the epicenter, is currently cut off from land access due to more than ten landslides and road collapses. Authorities are relying on helicopter transport to deliver food, medicine, and emergency equipment.
While officials, including San José del Palmar Mayor León Fabio Marín Moncada, have reported no fatalities in the municipality, the material destruction is extensive. In San José del Palmar, approximately 400 homes have been affected and at least 20 buildings have collapsed. The region is also facing critical shortages of electricity and water, and telecommunications remain unstable.
In the nearby municipality of Istmina, Mayor Jaison Mosquera Sánchez reported 75 injuries and at least 100 collapsed homes, with 900 others sustaining damage. Schools have been converted into temporary shelters for displaced families. The Chocó region's response is further complicated by historical infrastructure deficiencies and the presence of armed groups in certain areas, which may impact the safe delivery of humanitarian aid.
