Colombia earthquake kills 281 and leaves hundreds missing FAST-MOVING
A magnitude 7.4 earthquake in northwest Colombia has resulted in at least 281 deaths, 3,971 injuries, and 379 people missing. The epicenter was located near San José del Palmar in the Chocó department. The disaster has impacted 102,105 people and 44,936 families across 426 municipalities in 15 departments.
Infrastructure damage is extensive, including 127 collapsed buildings, 10,677 destroyed homes, and 65,841 damaged properties. Other affected facilities include 236 health centers, 2,136 educational institutions, five airports, and various bridges and roads. Valle del Cauca has reported the highest fatality count with 148 deaths.
President Abelardo de la Espriella and Housing Minister Jaime Andrés Beltrán have announced a multi-stage reconstruction plan. Immediate measures include rent subsidies for the next six months and relief for public utility payments. The government is also coordinating with the private sector to utilize heavy machinery for debris removal and to support long-term rebuilding efforts.
