Colombia earthquake: 285 dead and man rescued alive after 7.4 magnitude quake
A powerful 7.4 magnitude earthquake has struck western Colombia, centered in San José del Palmar, Chocó. The disaster has resulted in at least 285 deaths, nearly 4,000 injuries, and approximately 400 people missing.
In the city of Pereira, rescue teams are engaged in a race against time to extract survivors from the ruins of collapsed buildings, including the Dibeni Hotel. Amidst the devastation, rescuers have reported a rare sign of hope: a man was found alive under the rubble nearly four days after the initial tremor.
The earthquake has caused widespread destruction, damaging or destroying tens of thousands of homes, schools, and hospitals. The United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) has warned that the catastrophe could trigger a new wave of displacement in a country already facing humanitarian challenges.
President Abelardo de la Espriella, who assumed office only days before the quake, faces scrutiny over the initial crisis response. He is scheduled to visit several of the hardest-hit cities, including Pereira, Cali, and Quibdó.
