Colombia earthquake: nearly 300 dead and 140 missing after 7.4 magnitude quake

One week after a powerful 7.4 magnitude earthquake struck western Colombia near the Pacific coast on August 10, rescue efforts continue amid dwindling hopes of finding survivors. A preliminary official death toll stands at nearly 300 people, with at least 140 individuals still missing.

The disaster has caused massive destruction, particularly in coffee-producing regions. The emergency management service reports that approximately 27,000 properties have been partially or fully destroyed. Cities such as Pereira and Cali have suffered extensive damage.

The earthquake represents the first major crisis for President Abelardo de la Espriega, who assumed office only three days before the event. In response to the catastrophe, the President has requested that U.S. President Donald Trump temporarily suspend customs duties on Colombian exports to aid the country's recovery.
