Juan Pablo Montoya turns Barranquilla race into earthquake relief fund
Former Formula 1 driver Juan Pablo Montoya and his son Sebastián Montoya transformed a scheduled motorsport exhibition in Barranquilla into a major fundraising event for earthquake victims in Colombia.
Following a devastating earthquake on August 10 that caused significant casualties and destroyed thousands of homes, organizers decided to donate 100% of the event's profits and ticket sales to reconstruction efforts. The event, held at the Gran Malecón, featured a ‘Montoya vs. Montoya’ duel and exhibitions of various racing categories including FIA F2, NASCAR, and IndyCar.
In addition to the race, the event served as a humanitarian platform with donation points and auctions for sporting goods. Local authorities and corporate partners, including Bavaria and the Barranquilla Mayor's Office, supported the initiative to provide aid to families affected by the seismic activity in regions such as Chocó.
