Colombia earthquake kills 265 as rescue efforts enter final phase
A magnitude 7.4 earthquake, the strongest to hit Colombia this century, has left at least 265 people dead and more than 3,500 wounded. As rescue operations enter a critical final phase, nearly 500 people remain missing.
Search efforts are concentrated in heavily impacted cities including Cali, Pereira, and regions such as Risaralda, Caldas, and Chocó. In Pereira, rescuers are using vibration-detecting equipment to search for survivors, including a potentially trapped street vendor. Specialized teams, including the Mexican group Topos Azteca, are assisting local emergency services in navigating collapsed structures.
President Abelardo de La Espriella, who assumed office only days before the disaster, has declared an economic emergency and announced three days of national mourning. The government has also introduced relief measures for families in Risaralda, including rent subsidies and a three-month suspension of utility payments. The disaster response faces challenges due to a complex political transition from the previous administration.
