Colombia earthquake response prioritizes missing persons and aid transparency

Following a 7.4 magnitude earthquake centered in San José del Palmar, Chocó, Colombian authorities are prioritizing search and rescue operations for over 140 missing persons. President Abelardo de la Espriella reported a provisional death toll of 289, with 4,187 injured. Due to damage to 2,838 educational centers, classes will transition to virtual formats.

In Pereira, the Sociedad de Mejoras de Pereira ProRisaralda will take over the coordination of humanitarian aid collection points, a task previously managed by the local Mayor's office. This transition, requested by Mayor Mauricio Salazar, aims to increase transparency and traceability in the distribution of donations to families affected by the seismic event. The effort involves collaboration with the Food Bank, the Pereira Chamber of Commerce, and Cáritas Diocesana to ensure resources reach those in greatest need.
