Colombia earthquake: 289 dead and 143 missing after 7.4 magnitude quake

One week after a devastating 7.4 magnitude earthquake struck western Colombia, rescue operations continue as authorities search for 143 missing persons. The official death toll has reached 289, with 4,187 people injured. The earthquake, which had its epicenter near San José del Palmar in the Chocó department, caused widespread destruction in cities such as Cali and Pereira.

The Colombian government has declared a national disaster and established a unified command post to coordinate rescue and reconstruction efforts. President Abelardo de la Espriella emphasized that the primary mission remains locating survivors. International assistance has arrived, including rescue teams from Israel, the United States, and Ecuador.

In Pereira, heavy rainfall has complicated search efforts and impacted those living in makeshift camps. Despite rumors of troop withdrawals, Asocapitales has denied that rescue teams have left the affected areas. Several cities, including Cali, Pereira, Manizales, Quindío, and Armenia, remain under red alert as the humanitarian crisis persists.
