Colombia earthquake kills nearly 300 people

A 7.4 magnitude earthquake struck Colombia on Monday, August 10, causing widespread destruction and death. The disaster has resulted in nearly 300 fatalities and left more than one hundred people missing.

In Cali, the country's third-largest city, buildings including those in the Torres del Limonar residential complex have collapsed. Rescue operations have been halted in several buildings as the chances of finding survivors are considered minimal.

Volunteers and rescue teams are working to recover personal effects from the rubble to provide closure to grieving families. Amidst the tragedy, there are calls for political unity and effective institutional response to manage the humanitarian crisis and avoid the mismanagement seen in previous historical disasters.
