Pereira building collapses following Colombia earthquake

Eight days after a 7.4 magnitude earthquake struck Colombia on August 10, a three-story building collapsed in Pereira. The structure, located on Calle 26, had been previously evacuated by authorities due to structural risks. Witnesses reported a loud noise immediately preceding the collapse, which created a large dust cloud in the area.

In the aftermath of the seismic activity, the humanitarian situation in Pereira is intensifying. At the Olaya Park concentration point, the number of displaced persons rose from 250 to 1,200. Recent heavy rainfall has damaged temporary shelters, affecting the clothing and bedding of families.

The Pereira Mayor's Office reported that eight temporary shelters have been established, providing assistance to over 1,300 people and domestic animals. Authorities have begun relocating families from Olaya Park to the Coliseo Menor, prioritizing vulnerable groups including children, pregnant women, the elderly, and people with disabilities.
