Colombia earthquake triggers humanitarian aid and telecom relief

A 7.4 magnitude earthquake struck western and central Colombia on Monday, August 10, centered in San José del Palmar. The disaster has resulted in over one hundred deaths and thousands of injuries, causing significant material damage.

In response to the humanitarian crisis, Pope Leo XIV has donated 100,000 euros to Cáritas Colombia to assist with emergency relief and coordination through local dioceses. The Vatican indicated that additional assistance may be provided as specific needs are identified.

Telecommunications companies in Spain have also launched relief measures to facilitate communication between families. Telefónica (via Movistar and O2), MasOrange, and Vodafone have announced free calls and SMS to Colombia. MasOrange has implemented a 15-day period with limits on minutes and messages, while Telefónica is offering roaming relief for those currently in the affected region.
