Colombia earthquake triggers massive humanitarian response

A 7.4-magnitude earthquake that struck Colombia on August 10 has caused widespread devastation across 15 departments and 472 municipalities. As of mid-August, reports indicate at least 304 to 314 deaths, over 4,400 injuries, and 426 people missing.

The disaster has impacted more than 186,000 people. Damage to infrastructure is extensive, with approximately 26,500 to 30,000 homes destroyed and over 134,000 others damaged. The education sector is also heavily affected, with 1,631 schools damaged and hundreds more facing collapse or imminent risk.

Humanitarian organizations are mobilizing a large-scale response. Partners are seeking $135 million to address the crisis, while the World Food Programme (WFP) has requested $23 million specifically to provide food assistance to 100,000 people over the next three months. The WFP has already begun distributing rations in Pereira and Quibdó, utilizing logistics hubs in Cali, Medellín, and Quibdó to scale operations.

Access to some of the hardest-hit areas, such as Chocó, remains difficult due to landslides and damaged roads and bridges. Relief efforts are being coordinated by UN agencies including UNICEF, UNDP, and OCHA to provide food, hygiene kits, and sanitation in temporary shelters.
