Colombia earthquake triggers reports of lost pets

A 7.4 magnitude earthquake struck near San José del Palmar, Chocó, on August 10, marking the strongest seismic event recorded in Colombia in the last decade. The tremor was felt across various regions, including Manizales, Cali, Pereira, and Bogotá.

The disaster has led to numerous reports of lost pets as animals flee in panic due to noise and sudden environmental changes. In Manizales, a dog named Lolita was reported missing in the Chipre sector. In Bogotá, a nervous dog named Río went missing near Calle 170 and Autopista Norte, while in Cali, a dog named Max was lost in the Ciudad Meléndez sector.

Experts recommend several safety measures for pet owners during seismic events. Preparation should include an emergency kit with food, water, medication, and identification. During a tremor, owners are advised to remain calm and secure pets with leashes or carriers. Following an earthquake, it is critical to check animals for physical injuries and monitor them for signs of shock or unusual aggression.
